The Tingler Incident: A Boy’s First Movie Adventure

I guess I was about 9 when “The Tingler” was showing on the big screen in my hometown. I have an aunt about six years older. She decided to take me to see this movie. Why she thought this was a good idea is beyond me. I had never been to a movie theatre or seen a scary movie and had no idea what to expect or how to act. I guess this was just another one of those learn as you go experiences.

Two things happened, I did learn and I did go.

At the time “The Tingler” was made, there were not a whole lot of special effects so to make things more interesting, the managers of theaters had to be creative to make these low-budget movies scarier and attract more customers. I do not believe I was their target audience, quite the opposite, I believe my aunt, a teenager of about 15 at the time thought of me as her target to scare the daylights out of, and give her something to laugh about with her friends.

She was the aunt that had such a significant impact on my life as a babysitter. The one who punished us for misbehaving by making us stand with our nose in the corner as punishment. The only accomplishment of this punishment was to establish our growth rate by measuring the height of where the paint was worn away in the crack of the corner of the wall. I spent so much time with my nose in the corner I had to start wearing glasses when I was 8 years old.

Being so young, I was not expected to know better and looked forward to experiencing my first movie, but with this aunt’s track record, I should have known better.

My aunt was not a malicious person, only inexperienced in learning my ways, and I do not believe she intended to cause me irreparable harm by simply taking me to a movie. Quite the contrary, today, scary movies are my favorite.

We arrived at the theater and took our seats on the end of the aisle. Or should I say, I took the aisle seat at my aunt’s insistence. I should have suspected something was not right, but being the trusting soul that I am, I did not give it a second thought…at least that is until “The Tingler” appeared for the first time.

For you who have no clue what “The Tingler” was and to demonstrate the imaginative genius of film producers in the 50′s, ‘The Tingler’ was a creature that feeds on fear, lives inside the human body and looks like a disgusting centipede. Really no imagination involved other than trying to devise a creature that was scary and believable. Did I say believable? I meant credible. The early movie creatures had to have a gimmick to make them seem real and a story line that movie goers could understand. This movie did not meet the basic qualification of a scary movie other than it was not meant for an impressionable 9-year old to see. I probably could have been alright with the movie if I had known what to expect. Of course, for my aunt to tell me what to expect would have ruined all her fun.

The movie was full of eerie music that built to a crescendo just as “The Tingler” appeared. At the same time, a totally unexpected event happened. My seat began to vibrate and move back and forth. The mind of a 9-year old already frightened by the music and “The Tingler,” itself had reached its limit when the seat was set in motion. The theater management thought rigging the aisle seats to move at a specific time in the movie would heighten the effect of “The Tingler.” They exceeded their greatest expectation when this little 9 year old jumped up and yelled as loud as he could, “I am out of here,” and on that note, disrupted the entire theater trying to escape as fast as possible. There was just no way “The Tingler” was going to get this kid.

I was well on my way to escaping the theater when my aunt finally caught up to me. I think she was a little embarrassed and mad, because my reaction was not what she expected. As a stark raving lunatic, I was more believable than the actors and even “The Tingler” on the screen. You might say I succeeded where the movie failed. Yep, to this day, I think I stole the show and was the real star. My aunt would never recover and would eventually escape her embarrassment by joining the Air Force.

Your Personal Vibration

Everything in the universe is made up of vibrations. Every single thought you send out into the universe resonates at a certain frequency depending on what emotion is attached to it at the time. Just like heat, electricity, light and magnetism are the result of vibration manifestation, thoughts are no different. You have probably heard of the great Law of Attraction before and how you attract into your life, people, circumstances and situations in proportion to the thoughts you entertain within your mind. The Law of Attraction states that whatever thoughts are emotionalized become magnetized and attract similar and like thoughts. If your thoughts are negative then you attract negative people, circumstances and situations into your life. If your thoughts are positive then the opposite is true.

I have heard many different interpretations over the years of how this law actually works, however, the underlying message is always the same, you become (attract) what you think about most of the time. It is very easy at first for a lot of people to dismiss such a law as being plausible simply because the vibrations our thoughts emit are not evident to our five senses, but this is not merely enough to dismiss the claims as being false. A magnet will send out vibrations and exert a force strong enough to attract a piece of steel but we cannot see, taste, smell or hear the mighty force.

Whether you believe the Law of Attraction works by thought vibration is completely up to you but the fact of the matter is that the Law of Attraction works in one way or another. If you think negative thoughts then it’s not hard to see that you will attract negative circumstances, situations and let’s face it, only negative people want to be in the company of other negative people.

Go onto facebook and take a look at the status messages that certain people put up, what you will see is the same people complaining about the same crap day after day. it’s not a coincidence that these people are always miserable. They think the same thoughts, do the same things and end up blaming everything or everyone else but themselves. You will also notice that their friends are usually the same miserable souls who inflate their sense of injustice by agreeing with their deluded perceptions of reality. Like attracts like and negative thoughts and emotions attract the same circumstances. The Law of Attraction is real and it is at work whether you believe it or not.

Imagine you are late for work one day and you rush out of the house jump into the car and set off on your way. The thoughts you entertain at this point are important to how the rest of your day pans out. If you feel frustrated or angry that you got up late and anticipate a bad day ahead, then the chances are you will attract what you expect. if you then get caught in a traffic jam, you’re feelings will intensify thus reinforcing the negative state you are already in, and so the day will continue like that.

It’s not that the law of attraction created the traffic jam to piss you off, but as I mentioned earlier, the thoughts that you emotionalize attract similar and like thoughts. So when you’re faced with the traffic jam you automatically get more frustrated because your thoughts will be inevitably negative. Your previous thoughts attracted more of the same and you start to create your day within the constructs of negativity. The good news is that you can change your thoughts at any time. When you start to look at things in a positive way then your positive thoughts will attract more of the same. You then begin to create your day (reality) with more possibilities simply because your mind is in a much more creative state.

Now these may be the kind of thoughts you, me or most other people would have in this situation but what’s the point, you haven’t got a time machine, you can’t transport to work, but we always seem to contemplate the worst case scenario in our head even though nine times out of ten the worst case scenario never happens the way we imagine it. All your doing is creating a negative vibration that has only one outcome. Negative thoughts attract more negative thoughts which in turn creates negative situations and circumstances. The Law of Attraction is real whether you believe it or not.

Let’s face it, the only logical and practical way to deal with the above scenario is to accept that you are late and to realize that how you react to the situation will determine how well the rest of your day pans out. Even if you were late for work and half way there you got a puncture, the only way to approach that situation is to accept the facts the way they are, don’t react negatively, put a smile on your face and say, hey, maybe this was a sign, maybe I was meant to be late, maybe I was meant to get a puncture because for all I know a mile or two down the road I could have been in a car accident.

Now this may sound ludicrous to you but if you were to be completely honest with yourself, isn’t that a more productive way to look at the situation. Doesn’t it make a lot more sense to look at life through the eyes of an optimist, wouldn’t your life be a lot more satisfying if you believed that life will always throw you a curve ball and how you react to unsavoury circumstances will ultimately determine how you see your reality.

Whether you believe in the Law of Attraction is irrelevant but if you live your life in accordance with this law, you will undoubtedly manifest the abundance, success, joy and optimism that the law itself claims to bestow. You really do become what you think about most of the time and with practice you will feel it for yourself.

Simply identify terms that are of interest to your market niche. For instance, as a cycling coach, I know that cyclists and multisport athletes are interested in learning about power-based training. So I can develop a website glossary that defines terms such as power, functional threshold power, critical power and power meter. The beauty of a glossary is that it is very easy to create and does not require a significant amount of your time. It will also give your readers the type of information that encourages them to return to your website. Just add a new term every couple of weeks to maintain interest.

3. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). FAQ can be used in much the same way as tips and a glossary. However, an advantage of FAQ is that you can use popular questions. Based on your experience, you simply include the questions you have been asked and provide answers for those queries on your website. For example, I am often asked questions such as “How can I increase my power on the bike?” and “What are the benefits of training with power?” By providing the answers to questions like these, I am able to demonstrate my expertise and increase the likelihood that visitors will use my services.

4. Stories. Stories are inspirational anecdotes that can encourage and motivate your visitors. Good stories provide useful information and serve as examples for people to follow. Your stories should be brief (1-3 paragraphs) and honest, and should include a lesson we can all learn from. For example, if you have a customer that overcame a very difficult situation, their story could serve as an inspiration to people dealing with similar problems. Of course, you need to get the customer’s permission before you use their story and you may need to protect their identity as well.

5. Case Studies. A case study is a real life example of a problem and the strategies used to solve that problem. The benefit to the reader is that your case studies will provide specific techniques and tools that can be used to address a variety of common issues and problems. However, the big question is where this fits in the overall scheme of things. Is it a big deal? Or is it just one of the many components involved in the process?

The truth is that there is a better strategy for mastering pronunciation. No matter which linguistics expert you talk to they will all say the same thing. The best way to learn a new language is to live the language. In other words, immersing yourself in the language being spoken naturally is the best strategy.

And when you are immersing yourself you are doing more listening than speaking!

If you are using these tools as just one component of your approach I can see some value. But don’t get carried away by the sales pitch! They are only one very small element of learning Spanish effectively!

Ok, you want to surprise that special someone and score tickets to their favorite band for your anniversary. You search Google for tickets to the show. A bunch of ticket broker websites appear on the first page. All claiming to have the seats to the concert. You click one and find the concert and date to score the tickets. Holy S@3%!! the lowest cost ticket is $250 and that’s not even a good seat in your opinion. How can this be? Simple Supply and Demand. Maybe that concert is Madonna’s first in 10 years or U2, or Elton John’s opening night at Caesars Palace. All of these concerts will have a high demand and very low supply of tickets.

Beside the economics of ticket selling what other factors play a role in the ticket broker pricing? When Elton John announced that he signed an exclusive 2 year contract with Caesars Palace in Las Vegas for his anticipated Million Dollar Piano Tour, Fan all over the world (yes World) were looking to score tickets to the event. That is a hell of a lot of fans for a limited amount of tickets. If you were lucky enough to get tickets to this event, good for you, but for most fans they were not as lucky. There were pre-sales for the concert prior to the event going on sale to the public and those brokers (mostly) scooped up a gigantic amount of seats. These tickets ranged from $100-250 “Face Value”. Tickets were listed on every Secondary Market Website immediately after being bought even though the concert was 7 months away and the public sale had not started. Ticket prices will remain steady for the months ahead until the event approaches at which time the prices will start to decrease somewhat.
